Ever visit websites where you had to scroll horizontally. This is starting to become a trend in modern web design, but it usually irritates the viewer. A good designer will develop websites that fit on most screen sizes. The current optimized layout for websites currently is 1024 x 768 pixels.

It usually annoys me a lot! One must apply the correct design otherwise it is FAIL and a huge negative.
So true!! This is especially aggravating if you are reading something and you have to keep scrolling back and forth to read. I promise you, those websites lose visitors because of the horizontal scrolling!!!
You summed it up perfectly, horizontal scroll is irritating to the reader. And it is a good design principle that should be utilized. I have actually clicked out of websites with horizontal scroll.
